Cendana · Our Company

A Place to Think Carefully About Your Financial Life

Cendana was established to give households in Singapore access to financial education that treats them as thinking adults — with time to consider, space to ask questions, and no pressure to act.

§ I — Our Story

How Cendana Came to Be

Cendana was founded in 2018 by a small group of educators and former financial professionals who had noticed the same thing in their conversations with friends and neighbours: many thoughtful, well-educated adults in Singapore found it difficult to understand their own household finances clearly.

This was not from any lack of intelligence. It was because the materials available were either too technical to be useful, or too simplified to be meaningful, or were written by people who had something to sell. There was very little in between.

The founders believed that what was missing was a quiet, unhurried environment where adults could sit with a knowledgeable educator, ask the questions they had always meant to ask, and leave with a clearer picture of their own situation — without having been asked to sign anything.

The name Cendana refers to the sandalwood tree, known across Southeast Asia for its slow, steady growth and the lasting quality of what it produces. We chose it deliberately. Good financial understanding, like good wood, is not formed quickly.

Since opening, Cendana has worked with several hundred households across Singapore. Most participants are between forty and sixty years of age. Many are managing the overlap between children's education expenses, ageing parents, CPF planning and a growing sense that the next chapter of their lives deserves careful thought.

Our Mission

To make financial understanding accessible to households at the stage of life when it matters most.

We do this through small, structured education programmes that are independent of any financial product provider.

Our Values

  • Honesty about what we know and what we do not
  • Respect for the complexity of real households
  • No commissions, no referrals, no products
  • Pace that allows understanding to settle

§ II — Our Facilitators

The People Who Lead the Programmes

Each Cendana facilitator has a background in financial services and a genuine interest in adult education. They are chosen for their ability to explain clearly, listen carefully, and resist the temptation to simplify things beyond usefulness.

HT

Helen Tan

Lead Facilitator

Helen spent eighteen years in private banking before moving into financial education full-time. She leads the Foundations series and the Considered Investor course, and has a particular interest in how people in their fifties approach the question of what enough looks like.

RP

Rajan Pillai

Household Review Specialist

Rajan's background is in actuarial work and corporate finance. He leads the Private Household Review programme and has a methodical, calm manner that participants consistently say helps them feel more confident about what they are looking at.

LC

Lin Caiyun

CPF & Retirement Planning

Lin worked for many years as a financial planner and brings particular depth on CPF rules, the Retirement Sum Scheme and how the pieces fit together from age fifty-five. She assists in both the Foundations series and the Considered Investor course.

§ III — Our Standards

How We Keep the Quality of Our Programmes Consistent

Education quality is difficult to measure and easy to let slip. These are some of the practices we hold ourselves to.

Participant Feedback After Every Session

We collect written feedback after every session and review it as part of our programme planning. Facilitators read all comments and use them when preparing the following session.

Strict Handling of Household Documents

In the household review programme, any documents shared are handled according to a written protocol. They are not retained after the programme concludes, and are not shared with any third party.

Facilitator Continuing Education

Each facilitator undertakes structured continuing education each year to stay current with changes in CPF regulations, tax rules and the investment landscape relevant to Singapore residents.

Independence from Financial Product Providers

Cendana does not accept sponsorship from banks, insurers or fund houses. Our income comes from programme fees only. This keeps our content free from any commercial influence.

Programme Content Review

All programme materials are reviewed and updated at least once a year by the full facilitation team. We check for accuracy, clarity and relevance to the current financial landscape in Singapore.

Personal Data Protection

We comply with Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act in our handling of participant information. Participants may request access to or deletion of their personal data at any time.

§ IV — About Our Work

Financial education for adults in Singapore who are in their middle years is a different matter from the generic personal finance content that circulates widely. The questions that arise at forty or fifty are specific: how does CPF work when the balance transfers at fifty-five, and what should one do then? What does a household's cash flow picture look like when a salary ends, and how long can it be sustained? When is it sensible to begin moving savings into lower-risk positions, and what does lower-risk actually mean in a Singapore context?

These questions deserve careful, specific answers — not general principles copied from American financial writers who are writing for a different regulatory environment, a different tax structure and different retirement schemes.

Cendana's facilitators understand the Singapore financial landscape in detail: the CPF system, the Supplementary Retirement Scheme, the available investment platforms, the rules around medisave and medishield, and the way estate planning works here. They have worked in Singapore's financial sector and they teach from that experience, not from textbooks.

We are not the right choice for someone looking for rapid results or a simple formula to follow. We are the right choice for someone who would like to spend a few sessions with a knowledgeable, independent educator and come away with a more settled and more accurate understanding of their own financial picture.
